Charlie Bucket is the main protagonist of the 1971 film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

He is the last Golden Ticket winner and is invited to enter Willy Wonka's chocolate factory.

Background[]

He is a newspaper boy working for Mr. Jopeck. Charlie is working to support his struggling family, having to cabbage water for food, and a loaf of bread is seen as a luxury. Charlie is growing up in poverty and his family struggles to obtain food.

Charlie's father is deceased and he lives with his mother, as well as Grandpa Joe, Grandma Georgina, Grandpa George, Grandma Josephine.

Plot[]

In the 1971 film (and numerous theatrical versions) when he and Grandpa Joe drink the Fizzy Lifting Drink they started to float. But when they reach the ceiling, they are almost killed by a giant fan and a killer piano, and they are fortunately saved when they burp. Wonka initially seems unaware but eventually finds out and tells them that they do not get any prize because Charlie violated the contract. Charlie nevertheless returns the gobstopper that Wonka gave him; in turn, Wonka tells him that he was being tested and that he won, but the prize was not been a lifetime supply of chocolate, but the chocolate factory. Wonka reveals it to an employee who acts to see which child would give the bait to steal the gobstopper as a sort of moral test.

Physical appearance[]

Charlie wears a red sweater, brown pants and black shoes. In one scene of the film when he finds the golden ticket he wears a dark blue jacket, a light blue and green shirt underneath and when goes to bed wears an striped pajama.

Trivia[]

  • Charlie was originally supposed to be black as envisioned by Dahl while writing the 1964 book, but his agent at the time suggested otherwise.
  • Some of Charlie's teeth appear to be damaged stubs. This is said to be the result of him chewing gum throughout production. Violet's actor also ended up with 13 cavities.[1]
  • Charlie running home after finding the ticket was parodied in a 2000 episode of Family Guy (Wasted Talent) in which Peter Griffin trips and hurts his knee, and can't stop moaning in pain.
