Grandpa Joe used to work for Willy Wonka from the simple small candy store on Cherry Street to Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory.

Grandpa Joe was fired with the rest of the other employees after spies had stolen Wonka's secret recipes.

Grandpa Joe is widely known to be one of the most hated grandparents in movie history, with many circles of people displeased with his overall behavior and demeanor, not at all helped by The Fizzy Lifting Drink Incident (see below.)

Grandpa Joe is very happy when Charlie finds the last golden ticket enabling five lucky young kids and their guardians to explore the Factory. In the 1971 version of the film he almost made Charlie lose the factory by making him drink fizzy lifting drink. In the 2005 version he teaches Charlie to be kind and does not force anything upon chocolate. He lives in the factory.
